Lighting your “man cave” (or any other home entertainment space!)

With the biggest football game of the year just weeks away, we’re sure plenty of Americans are thinking about how to create the perfect viewing center in their home. Whether you have a designated “man cave” for watching sports and movies, a home theatre or just a cozy living room, there are a lot of elements to take into consideration.

“Man caves” and home theatre spaces are best known for their essentials – a state of the art flat screen HD television, sound system that rattles the windows and plush leather recliners complete with cup holders. But without the right lighting system, chances are you won’t get the most out of the home entertainment area you’ve invested in.

Here are a few lighting essentials you’ll want your perfect entertainment space to have:

  • Lighting control systems – Working from the back end, a lighting control system allows hosts to dim fixtures to produce comfortable lighting scenes.
  • Layered lighting – Incorporating a variety of illumination sources like step, wall and recessed lighting, will improve both the safety and aesthetics in your room. The beauty of today’s lighting options is that multiple fixture styles are available to suit a variety of preferences.

If you would like the same feel of a home theatre in the comfort of your living room, to start, have your lighting fixtures controlled by a dimmer. Not only does a dimming option help set the mood in the rooms of your home for any activity, it helps mimic the feel of a theatre setting when watching movies or sports. Also consider backlighting your TV to improve your visual comfort.

So what are your plans for the big game this year? Are you going out to watch it, or enjoying the game in your home entertainment space with family and friends?

The key to lighting your home entertainment space is to use a variety of fixture sources and control illumination with a dimmer.
