LED lighting has rapidly become the accepted light source for commercial lighting, and now the industry is seeing the utilization of LEDs in decorative and residential luminaires at a surprisingly fast rate. The technology and trends of LEDs are constantly evolving as the source is becoming a mainstream source of lighting. David Shiller takes an in-depth look into two trends in LEDs in this month’s issue of Enlightenment magazine.
One innovative trend is the development of highly integrated LED light engines. In the early days of LEDs, luminaire makers were stuck trying to pair drivers and LEDs, while figuring out heat sinking and optics on their own.
However, LED producers today are celebrating a new type of engineering that resembles a traditional light bulb and is referred to as an “LED light engine.” This type of engine will allow more decorative luminaire makers the capability to create high-performing and high-quality LED luminaires. Some of the key advantages of the highly integrated LED engines include:
Proper thermal management
Less room for manufacturing error
Greater speed to market for an LED fixture design
The high-wattage Chip-On-Board (COB) is another innovative trend on the rise as an alternative way to package LEDs. COB refers to the assembly in which the LED die is directly mounted on and electrically interconnected to its circuit board. This process only takes three steps:
Encapsulation of the die and wires
Using a COB of up to 20 watts can provide a one square inch LED with as much light output as a 100-watt incandescent lamp. The advantages of the high-wattage COB are reduced cost, better performance, short time to market and reduced space.
