Nautical Half-Bath Renovation with Lacey of Feathering My Nest

Meet Lacey – originally from Newfoundland, she moved to Calgary, Alberta with her fiancé about 10 years ago. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and years of experience sculpting for a local fabrication company, Lacey’s love of design overflowed into her next endeavor – a home décor blog!

In her own words, “Feathering My Nest was born out of the love to make a house a home, and to create a warm, love-filled space for friends and family.” She continues to do just that, and today she’s taking us through her recent half-bath renovation! Read on as we take you through our Q&A with Lacey on her newest project.

Lacey’s inspiration board conveys the vision for her project.

What decisions did you make to further that vision?
We brought in the nautical theme with a few small touches – a whale tail towel hanger, Turkish towels, and barnacles as décor pieces on the Ikea hacked shelf. The fresh and clean feel came in with the light fixture, as it gave more light to the space and we loved that the glass shades of the fixture had a seaside vibe. The chrome finish was clean and bright, which lends itself to the crisp and clean look.

These small décor pieces successfully brought in a nautical theme to the half bathroom.

How did lighting contribute to the overall design of the space? Why did you select the Archie fixture?
The chrome of the Archie fixture matched the chrome faucet that we had in the half bath, and, like I mentioned, we felt the glass had a nautical vibe – plus the lines of the fixture are sharp and clean. The texture of Archie’s glass shades brought in more visual interest without overwhelming the small half-bath space.

Were there any challenges along the way?
The main challenge was self-imposed; It was a lack of time as the overhaul was unplanned and started late in the afternoon on Saturday. I wanted to have the half bath back together by end of the day on Sunday. When we pulled the mirror and bars off the walls, there was quite a bit of patch work to do, but I hustled and had the space patched and repainted for the plumbing work scheduled for the next day. On Sunday, with the help of a plumber friend, the water pipes were dropped down to fit the new vanity, but that went quickly too – overall the project went smoothly! Even the ordering of the light fixture was a smooth process. We hopped on Amazon on Saturday evening, found the Archie fixture, ordered right away and it arrived on our doorstep three days later on Tuesday! We installed the fixture that afternoon!

Were you pleased with the overall outcome of the project?
We are incredibly pleased with the outcome of our quick half bath renovation. All of the details that went into the space are completely our style, from the Turkish towels and the beachcombed items to the Archie fixture.

Do you have any new projects in the works?
At the moment I’m preparing for the Calgary Home + Design show, where I am designing and building out a 500 square-foot workshop booth. I’ll be running workshops and speaking onstage during the event weekend! The next home based projects that are on our list include reworking the kitchen cabinets and backsplash, as well as retiling our fireplace! I can’t wait to share these with everyone!

We can’t wait to see what you tackle next, Lacey!
